Pchum Ben in Cambodia

October is the month when Cambodian people celebrate the festival of Phchum Ben. Together with Khmer New Year in April, Phchum Ben is the most important festival in the Khmer religious calendar. Cambodians have faithfully observed the festival every year for as long as anyone can remember.

The word 'Ben' in Khmer means to collect; 'Ben' also means to cup or mould cooked rice into portions. To 'Ben Baht' means to collect food to give to monks. The word 'Phchum' means to congregate or to meet together. Regardless how busy they may be during the fifteen days of Phchum Ben.

Cambodian people try not to miss a visit to the pagoda to dedicate food and offerings to the dead.
The festival's final day, September 28th, is the actual day of Phchum Ben, when people traditionally meet together at the pagoda, said the Venerable Ly Sovy of Lang Ka pagoda.

By doing this, Cambodians show respect for their ancestors. Everyone goes to the pagoda every year to honor this tradition, and nobody complains.

"According to [Buddhist] belief, people feel sorry for and remember their relatives who have passed away," Ly Sovy said. "They may be their parents, grandparents, a sister, a brother, daughter or son."

Om Sam Ol, a monk at Steung Meanchey pagoda, explained more about the beliefs behind the festival: "During Phchum Ben, souls and spirits come to receive offerings from their living relatives," he said.
"It is believed that some of the dead receive punishment for their sins and burn in hell - they suffer a lot and are tortured there," he added. "Hell is far from people; those souls and spirits cannot see the sun; they have no clothes to wear, no food to eat," Om Sam Ol continued. "Phchum Ben is the period when those spirits receive offerings from their living relatives and perhaps gain some relief. Relatives consecrate and dedicate food and other offerings to them."

Everyone goes to the pagoda because they don't want the spirits of dead members of their family to come to seek offerings at pagodas in vain. It is believed that wondering spirits will go to look in seven different pagodas and if those spirits can not find their living relatives' offering in any of those pagodas, they will curse them, because they cannot eat food offered by other people," the monk said.

"When the living relatives offer the food to the spirit, the spirit will bless them with happiness", he added.
According to the monk, legend has it that Phchum Ben came about because relatives of King Bath Pempeksa defied religious customs and ate rice before the monks did during a religious ritual. After their death, they became evil spirits.
He explained that later when a monk known as Kokak Sonthor gained enlightenment and became a Buddha on earth, all those evil spirits went to ask him "when can we eat?"
The Buddha said "you have to wait for the next Buddha in the Kathakot Buddhist realm. In this realm, evil spirits cannot eat."
When the next monk, Kamanou, achieved enlightenment and became a Buddha, all the evil spirits came again to ask the same question, and he gave the same answer as the previous Buddha.
Later another monk, Kasakbour, achieved enlightenment and became a Buddha, and the hungry evil spirits again asked him the same question. The Buddha told them the same thing - to wait for the next Buddha.

The final Buddha, Preah Samphot - also known also as Samanakkodom - said to the evil spirits, "Wait for your relative, King Bath Pempeksa, to offer merits and dedication. When the dedication is made, the food will be yours to eat."
King Pempeksa finally made an offering, but he did not dedicate the offering to the spirits of his relatives. All the spirits that were related to him cried that night. And when King Bath Pempeksa went to the Valovan pagoda to visit the Buddha, he was told by the Buddha that, "All the spirits of your relatives are crying, demanding food. The spirits should get food in the realm of Kathakot. Although you offered food and did good deeds, you did not dedicate the food and good deeds to them." So King Bath Pempeksa made another dedication and offering, and this time he dedicated the food and merits to his relatives. The evil spirits received the dedication and were finally reborn into paradise.

Top 5 Reasons Why I failed In Blogging

To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
I started this blog in 2008. … 6 years later, nothing grows.
I told myself:
Let’s stop making excuses Santel. Don’t blame the internet. Don’t blame your kids. Don’t blame your wife. Blame yourself!
Yes, you heard it right. I blamed myself.
I should quit.
But I refuse to fail.
I believe in online business like you believe in a beautiful girl.
I keep this blog even I don’t earn a dime out of it. KhmerBird is my brand. That’s what people say to me when they meet me for the first time.
They know and they read my blog.
That’s the good part of it. But it didn’t grow to the level that I expected.
I spent sometime to sit down and review my blogging journey.
This blog post might be useful to those who asked me for blogging course. I don’t have the course available yet. I used to think to open one. A few people asked me for it. But as long as I don’t experience it enough, I prefer to wait.
I will share with you here, the top 5 reasons that blocked my success in blogging. You might learn from my mistakes and avoid them when you decide to start your own blog.

1. I wasted my time to search for shortcuts

I know and I believe making money online is possible.
In stead of trying to find what work for me, I searched for shortcuts. I was obsessed with the concept of making money while sleeping.
I searched for the secret tips to make money online. I searched for Adsense secret tips. I wanted to learn how to make quick and easy money online.
I failed into the trap of internet scams. Even I didn’t pay for the course or buy their products, I lost a lot of my time.
There’s no shortcut in making money.
Online or offline.
Nothing comes without effort.
I dream I could make money while I sleep.
I think I wasted my 2 years of blogging in searching magic formula how to generate $10,000 per month without doing anything.
You can keep looking for it but for me I stop. I stopped looking for easy or fast way to make money online.
I need to find my own way.
You too, you need to find yours.

2. I followed too many advice

There are a lot of useful guides, courses and systems about making money online.
I spent almost $500 to buy a course which helped me nothing. I don’t blame the coach. It was because I didn’t take action and believe in what he taught.
There are also a lot of free tips about blogging, generate traffic and monetization.
If you spend your whole days to search for them, you are losing your time.
I don’t say those advice or tips are bad.
They are sharing their own experiences and efficient techniques. But if you just read and don’t take action, nothing will change for you.
I would recommend you to limit 20% of your time for reading advice. The rest of 80% of your blogging time should reserve to work on your blog, try different things to see what work and what doesn’t work.
Your blog will not change or grown if you just read other blogs.
You need to take action on your own blog. That will help to grow your online business.

3. I didn’t deliver what I’ve promised

it’s bad.
I failed many times.
I made excuses.
But if you think you can’t deliver it, don’t promise. Nobody force you to promise. Don’t say anything unless you are really sure you can deliver it.
I didn’t blog much during the last few years. I lost trust from my readers. They are all gone.
They didn’t know what to expect from me.
If you have a blog, make sure to define an editorial schedule that you can commit to.
I recently reduce from 5 posts to 2 only but I will commit to it. At least for the time being.
You should deliver your value in a consistency rhythm.
I am trying …

4. I wanted to please the world

When this blog started to grow, I wanted to add more topics. I wanted to reach everybody.
I ended up by reaching nobody.
I don’t have time. I don’t have resource. I don’t have money. At the end, I don’t even have my audiences. It is a 6 years waste of time.
I really regret it.
I should keep this blog small and interact with my audiences. I wanted to make it big. I ended up by making it become unless.
If you blog is starting to grow, don’t make any change, unless you are really sure about it.
Don’t make the assumption without any data. Don’t guess what your readers want from you. Ask them if you want. Do a quick survey before doing any change.
I changed the topics very often. I don’t even know who I write to now.
Before starting a blog, you should define your audiences first. You need to have in your mind who you want to connect.
People asked me how to build a popular blog. I told them your blog can’t be popular to everyone, but you can make your voice heard to a few amount of people.
That’s what I am trying to do on my blog as well.

5. I didn’t define tasks and priorities

I declared my goal for 2014 that I want to generate $1,000 from my online business.
I wrote it in a blog post.
That’s it.
I didn’t spend my time to break it down into different income streams.
For example, I should ask myself to get that $1,000, how many possible income streams I should look at? App? Adsense? Advertising? Affiliate? eBook?
Only at last month, I woke up in a very early morning and I asked myself some stupid questions.
I never do meditation but that morning I let myself go.
I asked myself:
If you want to generate $1,000 what would you do today?
I couldn’t answer it.
It’s almost 7 months since I set the goal. I didn’t define any task to accomplish that goal. It’s useless to set a goal without taking any action.
Without action, how it possibly happen? It is not possible right?
Now I almost finished to set up my own system. I will share more detail about it later.
I defined priority tasks that I need to do each day, each month. I stop looking for any system, app or magic.
Everything is working well with me with a note-book and pencil.
I started to develop small habits to get things done and I repeat them everyday.
For example I just joined the challenge to write 500 words per day. I need to kick myself out of my comfort zone to get more things done.
These are mistakes I made when I started blogging. I hope you would learn something out of it. If not, at least this post will remind me not to commit those mistakes again.
What is the big obstacle that you are facing right now in your blogging journey? let us know in the comment session, we will discuss to find way out.

The 4 Opportunities You Can Put The Internet To Good Use For Free

What we can do on the internet (online)?
We can do much more than just playing Facebook.
I will share about 4 essential opportunities that you can get from online. This post might give you an idea how to start your online business from scratch as well.
My best recommendation is that you take your time to bring a notebook and pen, sit and write down what you plan to do in the future and see if the internet could help.
There are a lot of different ways to start an online business. Make sure you pick one or two, then test them to see if it works for you. If not, there are many different ways.
Don’t do multiple things at the same time, you will lose focus and will not have time to fully test and adjust.
Let’s go to each of the 4 main opportunities:

1. Reach

Thank to the technology we have Wi-Fi, 3G and internet access almost everywhere.
The revolution of Smartphone give possibility to everyone to carry information and their data everywhere they go.
We can connect with people in a very fast speed and almost at no cost.
If you have a good story to tell, you can write a book and publish it by yourself. Then you can sell it to the entire world.
Internet provides us such a beautiful platform to reach people, no matter who you are, where you live or what you do.
Everyone can get connected and reach to the people. That’s why you need to bring your business online, otherwise you will miss this great opportunity.

2. Learn

It is not hard to learn about anything these days.
If you want to cook a good food and you don’t know the recipe, search it on YouTube.
If you want to learn any specific topic, search on Google.
The information are available out there. You just need to figure out what you want to learn. You can even get inspiration from the people who share their success on their blogs or websites. If you read something and apply it but it doesn’t work for you, you can even ask for help from the experts.

3. Share

If you have passion in something or get an important message to share to the world, you can.
You can share about just anything.
Your voice can be heard by thousand of people who follow you. You can share about passion, expertise, fear or success. it’s a good opportunity to contribute and pay back to the earth where you were born.

4. Sell

That’s the good part.
In the past, you need to open a shop in order to sell something.
Today you can sell almost everything online.
You can sell information such as eBook, course, coaching and consulting.
You can sell services such as web development, SEO services and many other things that you are good at.
You can sell products such as Software, T-shirt, shore or any physical product.
All the transaction can be automated and you don’t have to open your shop 24/7. People can buy things from you even while you sleep. That’s the beauty of selling online.

Conclusion

There are the main opportunities that internet can provide you online.
You can think about it and participate in any of these or all of these according to the type of your business.
The topic of this post might be a bit generate, but I think it is useful to people who wonder how can people create online business from scratch.
Spend sometime and think about yourself.
What do you really want to do in your life.
Once you find out your main goals, then break it down into the action steps. Internet will help you to reach your destiny with its fantastic technology and supported platforms.
I don’t want to write 1,000 words again because I think your time is valuable and you should use it to ask yourself and find out your own system that will help you to accomplish more things in your life.
If you are stuck or need advice, drop me a comment below!
PS: I will reduce again my editorial schedule to publish new article once per week. I will make sure a good content will be published every Monday at 4PM. I want to have more time to grow my online business and do other things. I hope the new schedule will be warm welcomed by all of you. Thank you for your support.

10 Things Highly Productive People Do Every Day

This is a guest contribution from personal growth blogger Samphy Y.
Productivity is never an accident. It is always the results of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning and, focused effort. – Paul J. Meyer

Productive people tend to be more successful than unproductive people. They produce and create. Some (if not many) of the stuffs they produce end up as a junk. But they keep moving until they can create what the market needs.
Thomas Edison produced more than 10,000 junks before he invented the light bulb we can’t live without today. Henry Ford, whose cars we use all over the world, went broke five times before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company.
They do different things yet they are productive. Highly productive.
What makes them different? They do these 10 things every day.

1. They visualize their dream life

While a lot of us has been advised to never lose hope, highly productive people tend to go a step further. They know what their dream life looks like and they visualize it every day. They know the secret of the Law of Attraction, which states you get whatever you attract.

2. They prioritize what to do

Highly productive people have a list of daily priorities. Lots of them do it in writing or use an app like Lift, Wunderlist, or 2Do. Others know exactly what to do every day without having to write them down. All of them make it a routine to do their “thing” every day.

3. They limit distractions

While we are watching TV, Facebooking away our time, chatting about how the world is going to collapse… highly productive people say no to distractions. Unless watching TV, Facebooking or chatting enable them to produce, they are considered distractions and never allowed to get in the way of their productivity.

4. They’re highly focused

Now with no distractions, productive people can direct their attention to what they want to do. They have very clear aims and are highly focused to indulge themselves in what it takes to achieve it. A good example is writing. Writers tend to wallow in words they have for what they have to write, to create for their audience. They don’t let anything get in their way until they’re done.

5. They produce every day

This is obvious. If you don’t produce, how can you become productive? What’s surprising is however little time they have, they still do their thing: produce. It can be a tiny thing that could form a tiny part of their invention. A productive writer, for example, writes every day without fail. They write when they can’t wait to write. They write when they don’t feel like writing. They write when they know what to write about. They write when they do not know what to write about. They write, how poorly.

6. They have timeframes

Like us, highly productive people have as many (if not, more) things on their plate. So they set timeframes for their to-do items. Lots of writers write for an hour or two early in the morning. They would aim to achieve their task within the set timeframes and leave perfectionism behind for the time being.

7. They celebrate small wins

Celebrating small wins (and really, really feeling it) is another thing highly productive people do without fail. It activates the reward pathway that sits in the middle of the brain and makes sure we repeat the action. Celebrating small wins is a way to stay motivated and enlarge the achievement.

8. They achieve their daily priorities without fail

How poor the achievement, highly productive people is focused on getting things done and leave perfectionism aside until later. Doing so allows them to make achievements for which they can celebrate. It also leaves room for continuous improvement, through daily reflection.

9. They reflect

Daily reflection enables highly productive people to look back on what they did in the day and learn from it in order to continue to improve how they do it the next day. It is also a way to be express gratitude towards what they’ve achieved and what went well.

10. They feel gratitude towards their day

When they lay down at night, highly productive people think of positive things that happened in the day – those things for which they are grateful. Some of them even use a gratitude journal. Daily gratitude is a powerful thing productive people do to expand their happiness, and specifically their daily productivity.

Five Easy Steps to Get Started with Productivity

Now let me tell you this. It is easier than you think to become more productive. Just follow these 5 easy steps.
Step 1: Think big. The secret behind why highly productive people are so productive is this. They have a big life purpose that scares them so much they can’t help but take action every day, that they live each day as if it were the last day of their life.
Ask yourself, what’s your sentence? Nelson Mandela is a Man of Peace. I am a writer. What’s yours?
Step 2: Pick just one if you find it overwhelming to do all these at once. For example, you can begin to prioritize what to do every day. (Use a reminder if it helps.) Keep in mind that your priorities should move you inch by inch towards your dream lifestyle.
Step 3: Start small. Take prioritizing. If 4 priorities a day are too much, have only 1. If writing 500 words a day is too much, for example, write 50 words a day. Make it so small you cannot not do it, that success is so easy. Read more my previous post onhow small steps could lead to big changes.
Step 4: Celebrate small wins. Here I go again! Well, it worked wonderful for me and people I’ve introduced this idea to. And it is backed by science.
When we feel celebratory about something, it will likely activate the Reward Pathway in the brain, which makes sure we will repeat our behavior.
Step 5: Repeat step 1 through 4 every day.
That’s it! Now it is your turn to get started and become more productive.
Got something to share? Great! It is how we grow. Let’s start a fruitful conversation by using the comments section below this post!
